Hello i no this was a long time ago just seen it my dad was ronnie smith one of gus's best friends they did performance bikes together an everything else gus was like an uncle to me for so long my dad also died a few years before gus we went out to see gus in the isle if man TT practise week before his crash was a real heroo been up to his grave a few times He was a great rider an is still missed by all of us
A Top Man
I raced with Gus in the British power bike championship, i was introduced to him by one of the other racers. He was always joking and had an air about him which is why he was so popular. On the track, he was fast and fair, is happy go lucky exterior masked a super talented, focussed man with a burning desire to win.
I miss his banter and i am sorry he has gone. My heart goes out to his family. He is still here in our hearts.
I grew up with Gus and the boys reading PB!
Sadly missed in the world of bike journalism. Him and Ronnie Smith used to crack me up! R.i.p Gus. And best wishes to all of your family.
I should have done this a long time ago
Yasmin I met your father in 2004, at the European Superbike School, your Dad arrived as an instructor and he lit up the room with his character. I metioned that I had an interest in sports psychology and immediately he was interested.
We worked together that year with Mark Bruin and the team Gus was open minded and I believe benefitted enormously from the time we spent together. I was in touch with him that week in the I.O.M. I even tried to get him sponsorship for that ill fated trip. I was so sorry for your loss and my own so sorry it has taken me 5 years to come to terms with it.
I wanted you to know that I met Steve Plater thanks to your Dad and that since your dads death I have worked hard with Steve. I wanted to right the wrong. I know this won't bring your Dad back but when I saw Steve win the senior TT I thought of your Dad and all that he helped us achieve. I leave soon for a stupid bike trip with Steve and some mutual friends its a challenge style trip your dad would have been proud of.
I wish you all the best in your life and I have a parting gift for you.
I got your Dad to choose a record that truly inspired him to ride at his best. He chose The Spirit of 76 (full version) by the Alarm he was always inspired by the verse that starts "The price is high..... it made him think of friends who I am sure he rides in heaven with now.

He was a great guy. I always think of you Yasmin, though we have never met.
I was much older than you when I lost my Mum and Dad. Although it was very hard, I am sure losing Gus must have been really difficult for you to understand and cope with.
I hope you have continued to remember lots of happy moments that you shared with your Dad. I know I do of my own parents.
You are always welcome to get in touch. I am now married to Caroline who your Dad met many years ago. We have two boys, James (4) and Alex (3).
I hope you like my little tribute. Just copy and paste the link http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=142673940947&ref=mf
Take care and look after yourself.
Article on the way to the T.T
I remember reading Gus's article on his first TT trip and being moved by his humility and understanding of that lay ahead as a racer.
He didn't deserve to leave us, nor did those who met the same fate, it was a tragic accident imo.
This is a lovely and personal to your Dad, he was revered amongst his peers, admired by his friends and is missed by all of us.
He'll be watching you though, so no smoking!!

Sadly missed.
Your daddy was always an inspiration to me, you should be very proud of him.
I always think of him when the TT is on.
Kind regards,
Matt King
Yasmin this is a wonderful thing you have done to remember your daddy. I'm very sorry you lost him while you were so young. You father would be very proud of this site and you. Remember, he can live in your heart forever.
